College of the Canyons battled the visiting Cypress College, for what looked like a win that would break a four-game deficit, but a couple of late goals led to a 2-1 Cypress victory.
A scoreless first half, backed by freshman goalkeeper Matthew Swanson, put Canyons (1-6) in a good position to take the lead early in the second half.
COC sophomore Cesar Perez pushed his way down the right side to find fellow sophomore Julilan De La O at the center of the box who quickly hammered away the first goal of the match.
With the goal coming in the 50th minute, the Cougars fought to hold the lead for a majority of the half, but a small breakdown led to a Cypress goal from David Bonat with 15 minutes remaining.
Cypress persisted with the same energy achieving the game-winning goal only three minutes later from Abraham Gallo.
The Cougars continued to fight for the equalizer, but ultimately could not answer back. A goal-keeper switch at halftime gave Ivan Kerum the loss.
The Cougars next match is at home on Friday, Sept. 23, where they will work to take down the visiting Santa Barbara City College at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for their next two games.
Canyons will then be at Allan Hancock College on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. and then on to Chaffey College the following week on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.
