The years and seasons may differ but the start of the 2024-25 Glendale College Women's Basketball campaign looks similar to that of 2023-24 when the Lady Vaqs started 5-2 and then won 25 straight games and advanced to the state championship game. The current season is still unfolding but GCC looks to be hitting its stride as displayed by a pair of wins in its annual Holiday Crossover event, 64-38 over Rio Hondo College on Dec. 20 and a 71-38 win over Irvine Valley College Dec. 21.
Now 8-3 this season and the winners of three straight games, GCC had four starters in double figures against IVC as they jumped out to a 37-20 halftime lead thanks to 12 points by Malia Ulrery and 12 rebounds by Shadel Ffrench. Ulery led all scorers with 17 points and added 12 rebounds and Ffrench had 12 points and 16 boards, six off the offensive glass. Shushan Krikorian added 13 points and Sammy Velasquez had 10 points and Andrea Hurtado had nine points off the bench.
Glendale continues non-conference play this week with games Friday Dec. 27 in the Ventura Tourney against El Camino College at 4 pm and Saturday Dec. 28 at 2 pm against Irvine Valley College.
