Softball Drops Doubleheader to Bakersfield
The Santiago Canyon College softball team dodged the rain this Friday and hosted the Bakersfield College Renegades in a non-conference doubleheader. The Hawks showed signs of fight throughout both contests, but ultimately dropped both games.
Game One
Bakersfield defeats Santiago Canyon, 6-4
The Hawks barreled seven hits in the game with a more than half of their runs coming in the sixth inning. Despite trailing by one in the opening frame, the Hawks etched their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Alyssa Patlan reached base on a single up the middle then advanced to third on an error by the center fielder. She came around to score on a groundout from freshman shortstop Millie Maher.
However, the bats went cold for the ensuing four frames as they managed only two base runners and one hit.
The Hawks entered the bottom of the sixth inning down 6-1. Freshman designated player Isabella Altamirano led the inning off with a walk then advanced to second base on a single up the middle from freshman first baseman Kiana Bell. Freshman pinch runner Kaitlin Murphy, who lifted Altamarino, came around to score two batters later on a pinch hit RBI single from freshman Calysta Maciel.
Sophomore center fielder Haley Perez kept the inning going by drawing a walk, backed by a base knock from Patlan to send home Bell. Maher capped the rally with an RBI infield single, sending home Maciel, to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Freshman relief pitcher Nadeen Kerdiya kept the comeback hopes alive by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh, but a one-two-three inning from the Hawks in the bottom half sealed a 6-4 loss.
Sophomore starting pitcher Madison Lee (2-3) allowed six earned runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings of action. N. Kerdiya tossed 1.1 innings of hitless ball.
The top of the order did the majority of the damage as Patlan and Maher each connected for two knocks. Maher had two RBI, while Patlan and Maciel tallied one RBI.
Game Two
Bakersfield defeats Santiago Canyon, 3-1
Lee took to the circle for the second game of a doubleheader and burst out the gates by retiring the first six batters she faced. She struck out one in the first inning, followed by two punch outs in the second frame. She allowed a run to come across in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly, but had still not allowed a hit; just one walk.
The Hawks had not bagged their first hit of the game until the third inning, but had drawn three walks. However, they stranded all nine runners in scoring position in the first three frames.
Bakersfield went on to score a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, while the Hawks responded be stranding 15 runners in scoring position throughout the remainder of the game.
They were able to scratch across one run in the bottom of the seventh inning compliments of an RBI single from Patlan, but she was promptly picked off at first on the same play leading to the loss.
Patlan went 2-for-4 with an RBI to highlight the offense. Freshman catcher Grace Potter went 1-for-2 with a single and a pair of walks.
