Cypress College women's volleyball standout Rockelle Gholson has established herself as one of the best players in the conference.
Gholson was a 2015 All-OEC First Team selection for both indoor and beach volleyball. She currently leads the No. 8 Chargers in kills (111), kills per set (3.26), and blocks (26) through 11 matches this season. With a 10-1 overall record and 3-0 conference record the Chargers currently sit atop the OEC.
Who got you into volleyball and when did you start playing?
My mom got me into volleyball. She passed away from breast cancer in 2008 and that was her favorite sport so I tried it out in 7th grade and have been playing since.
If you weren't playing volleyball what other sport would you want to play at the college level?
Basketball...It was my first sport.
What makes Coach Welliver the type of coach you love to play for?
I love how she challenges us because she helps us become better players and toughens us up.
What are you majoring in and what's your favorite class?
I’m a communications major and my favorite class is Human Sexuality with Professor Johnson.
What is your perfect pre-game meal?
I don’t like to eat before games because I want to look good in my jersey.
Walk us through your pre-game warm up.
I like to hype myself up and I always have to listen to music before I warm up.

What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
Getting my homework done and sleeping.
Who on the team are you closest with?
Sina Amasio, we’ve been playing volleyball together since the 7th grade when I first started playing.
What is your leadership style?
I’m a vocal leader and when I talk to my teammates about something they know I mean business.
Once you're done at Cypress College how do you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered as someone who was fun, outgoing, and always smiling.
What is the plan once you graduate?
I want to transfer to a four year school where I can continue playing volleyball and pursue a career in media relations or television.
What do you want to say to the fans who have watched you play during your time at Cypress?
I want to thank them for their support. I think we play better in front of large crowds and we couldn’t accomplish what we have without them.
