NAME: Landry Armstrong
SPORTS: Volleyball, Basketball, and Beach Volleyball
ACHIEVEMENTS: A freshman out of Combs HS in San Tan Valley (AZ), Landry is a rare triple-threat by participating in three college sports. Additionally, she is a Biology/Pre-Med major who passed 19 units in the fall (3.85 gpa) and is enrolled in 23.5 units this spring.
Who got you into these sports and when did you start playing?
The day before 7th-grade volleyball tryouts, my dad took me to the park and spent about three hours doing drills with me. I was so sore and tired, but I made the team and I’ve been playing volleyball ever since. My high school petitioned to start playing Beach Volleyball during my junior year and, in my senior year, the team finished third in the state. I did play in the youth basketball leagues in Arizona starting in elementary school, but it wasn’t until my freshman year of high school that I started to take it seriously.
If you weren't playing any of these three sports, what other sport would you want to play at the college level?
I played softball for a year in high school, but I wasn’t very good. I was also on a competitive swim team when I was young, so I would probably want to try diving. I have a friend who is a diver at Saddleback. It looks interesting – and a little bit scary – so it would definitely be a challenge. I think that’s what makes it appealing to me.
What makes Coach Brian Hughes and Coach Fentriss Winn the types of coaches you love to play for?
Coach Hughes is laid-back, but knowledgeable about the sport (volleyball) and knows exactly what needs to get done. He’ll take the time to work with you on improving your skills. Coach Winn is tougher on us and not afraid to yell, but it’s constructive yelling and I think I respond better to that style. They are totally different styles of coaching but I like both styles.
What are you majoring in and what's your favorite class?
My major is biology (pre-medicine) and my favorite class right now is probably math. Kind of odd, I know, but I’m in pre-Calculus and chemistry right now.
What is your perfect pre-game meal?
Hahaha. I’ll eat whatever is around me. I don’t have a favorite meal, I can basically eat anything before a game.
Walk us through your pre-game warm up.
In volleyball and basketball it’s pretty much the same: just trying to get my mind right before I start running and stretching. In beach volleyball, got to stretch and put on sunscreen.
What are the first 3 songs on your pre-game playlist?
I listen to every genre of music so I just listen to whatever the team decides to play that day.
What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
What day off? If I get a day off I like going to the beach. That’s why I came to school in California. Or I’ll go hang out with my brothers who live up near Long Beach and play baseball at Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Who on the team are you closest with?
I’m close with everyone on both of my teams. I’ve introduced the basketball girls to the volleyball girls so now we have a large group of friends to hang out with.
What is your leadership style?
I’ve been a captain for every team in high school and for this year’s volleyball team. I’m a quiet leader on the court, but I’m also not afraid to get loud to get the team motivated.
Once you're done at Saddleback, what do you want to be remembered as?
I want to be remembered as someone who never gives up and always works hard.
What is the plan once you graduate?
Ideally, I would want to keep playing and I would love to continue playing all three sports, preferably in California. I want to be a doctor and right now I’m thinking pediatrics. I’m hoping to get a part-time job or an internship to see if that’s really what I want to have as my emphasis.
What do you want to say to the fans who have watched you play during your time at Saddleback?
Thanks for coming out to support our teams!
