Coming home is always a good feeling. After playing
basketball on a full ride for two seasons at Azusa Pacific
University, Madalene Barrett decided came home to play her favorite
sport, volleyball, at Fullerton College.
I was coaching volleyball at my high school this summer when I
realized I missed it so much. It was a very last minute
decision that I thought long and hard about but at the end of the
day, APU just wasn't an environment I thrived. I do greatly
miss my teammates and coach, but being welcomed into a program full
of friendly, hilarious teammates has helped the transition a
lot. Not to mention my coaches are so awesome. All
three [Hornet coaches] are nothing but helpful and encouraging
while holding us to a higher standard", according to Barrett.
Since joining the Hornets, the Troy High product has her team
off to a hot start ranking 4th in the state with an overall record
of 10-0.
"As for Fullerton College as a whole, everything is going so
much better than I expected. We've gotten so much support
campus wide, and at our games you see athletes of every sport and
administrators blending right in with our parents. I've never
seen a community college that has so much school spirit & pride
in every athletic program."
Currently, Madalene is second in the conference with 143
kills. She also has a .302 hitting percentage with 23 total
blocks.
"She is a great all around athlete and has primarily played
middle blocker through her high school years. However, with
the foundation of volleyball skills she developed, we were able to
put her in other positions to maximize her talents and contacts
with the ball while increasing our chances for team success.
As she continues to improve, I think she's going to have great
success in volleyball at Fullerton College and at the 4 year level,
FC Head Volleyball Coach Ed Rapp.
