Goals are important to Norco College sophomore Ramon Hernandez – on and off the soccer field.
“I would definitely say I am determined to reach my goals,” said Hernandez, a graduate of Riverside Patriot High School. “I’d like to see us make the playoff this year, and I have a goal of playing collegiate soccer at the next level.”
After six matches, Hernandez leads the Mustangs with nine
goals, making him one of the top goal scorers in the state. His 18
points leads Norco College, and the team captain has the Mustangs
off to a 5-2 record and on a three-match win streak headed into
their Orange Empire Conference opener on Tuesday, October 1 against
visiting Irvine Valley College at 3 pm.
Hernandez began playing soccer at the age of 8, inspired by
his father and after his dream of playing ice hockey were dashed by
after discovering the lack of facilities. He also tried his hand at
football and cross country, but it always came back to
soccer.
“My father has always been the main influence in my
soccer career,” Hernandez said. “He has taught me
everything about the sport. I stuck with soccer because it just
wasn't a sport; it was something more it was a game where I could
have fun and where nothing else mattered while I was
playing.”
Hernandez played just two years of high school soccer, his
freshman and sophomore season. His junior year he traveled to
Mexico in order to train at a youth soccer academy.
“I have grown to love the sport,” Hernandez said,
“and that is all I do now - play soccer.”
