IVC Volleyball sweeps in battle of top 10 teams in the state

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team swept Cypress in the first round of Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers were on the road Friday night and it was a match-up of two top-10 ranked teams in the state.

Irvine Valley players were on point and it led to another sweep.

The Lasers, ranked No. 7 in the state, improved their record to 15-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 win over No. 10 Cypress.

Irvine Valley stayed in first placein the OEC. The Lasers lead Saddleback (13-4, 8-2) by a match in the win column.

IVC received solid play all-around, getting at least five kills from five players.

Sophomore opposite Ava Guenther finished with eight kills and three aces, sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco had six kills and five digs and freshman outside hitter Tatum Pongs added six kills and four digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Avery Bennett ended with five kills and sophomore middle blocker Natalia Brandlin had five kills and five blocks for the Lasers.

Freshman libero Audrey Fowler ended with 21 digs and sophomore setter Mia Bertolone ran the offense with 30 digs and added nine digs for IVC.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at home against Santa Ana at 6 p.m. in a conference match.
