Cypress Alum Troy Taylor Makes MLB Debut with Seattle Mariners
SEATTLE, WA — Cypress College is proud to announce that former Chargers pitcher, Troy Taylor, made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Taylor contributed to the Mariners' dominant 12-1 victory over the New York Mets by pitching a scoreless inning and recording two strikeouts in his first MLB appearance.
Taylor's debut marks a significant milestone for Cypress College, as he becomes the 25th alum to make an MLB appearance, the most from any California Community College baseball program.
Cypress Baseball Head Coach Anthony Hutting expressed his pride in Taylor's accomplishment, stating, "I could not be more excited for Troy. He is a terrific young man on and off the field and his work ethic has always been second to none. To reach the Major League level is a remarkable accomplishment. This is just the start for Troy in what is hopefully a long and successful big league career. The Cypress baseball family is proud and can't wait to continue to follow Troy's journey at the highest level."
Troy's journey to the majors began at Cypress College during the 2021 season. As a Charger, he pitched in eight games, starting in five, compiled a 3-1 record with a 4.82 ERA, and in over 28 innings, he recorded 23 strikeouts and 20 walks. His strong performance at Cypress College paved the way for his transfer to UC Irvine, where he continued to excel before being selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 12th round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
Taylor's accomplishment is an inspiration to current and future student-athletes, showcasing the opportunities and pathways available through the Chargers Baseball Program. His success continues to build upon the legacy of excellence established by the program and its alumni.
