Two teams from the Orange Empire Conference (Fullerton and Cypress) will represent the South at the 2013 CCCAA State Tournament at Fresno City College May 17-19.
Fullerton College (30-13 overall) took the OEC by storm winning the conference title for the first time since entering in 1989. Their last conference title was 30 years ago while still in the South Coast Conference. The Hornets got by a scrappy East Los Angeles College squad beating the Huskies two out of three in the SoCal Regionals (5-6, 6-4, 4-3).
In the Super Regionals, FC beat El Camino Compton on Friday 8-0, and then beat Palomar 5-1 on Saturday. The Hornets hit some stormy weather on Sunday as Palomar rose up and smacked Fullerton 8-0 in game six. In game seven, FC pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind 7-6 victory to advance to the state tournament.
Cypress College (29-14) placed fourth in the OEC and made an impressive run in the Regionals. At the SoCal Regionals #9 Cypress traveled north to #8 Cuesta College and swept the Cougars in the best of three series (8-3, 5-0).
The Super Regionals were played at Saddleback College where the Chargers fell on opening day 4-3 to Mt. San Antonio in 10 innings. Cypress bounced back for games two and three beating College of the Canyons 5-4 and Saddleback College 6-4. On the final day on Sunday, the Chargers swept through Mt. San Antonio 6-3 and 6-0 in an impressive manner advancing to the big dance. Cypress has
Interestingly enough, Fullerton and Cypress are not only from the Orange Empire Conference (OEC), but they are also from the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD). This is the ONLY time that two baseball teams from the same DISTRICT have advanced to the state tournament!
Since 1988, when Regionals began and only four teams made it to the state tournament, on 13 occasions, two teams from the same conference (with or without divisions) have made it to the state tournament. The OEC has had two teams reach the state tournament NINE times, then the Big 7/Big 8 is next with three times, and then the Coast once.
Up Next: Both OEC teams will compete this Friday, May 17th with the #2S Chargers taking on #1N Santa Rosa College (33-7-1) @ 12:00 pm, and the #1S Hornets will open up with #2N Feather River College (29-12 overall) at 6:00 pm.
