Pirates earn split at Palomar Crossover

SAN MARCOS -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team picked up a win and a loss this past weekend at the 2023 Palomar College Crossover.

In the opener on Friday, the Pirates (3-3) picked up an impressive 96-86 win over the host Comets. 

After falling behind 28-14 midway through the first half, Coast turned on the jets and outscored the Comets 31-9 over the final 8:25 to take a 45-37 lead at the half.

From there, the Pirates never relinquished that lead and pulled away for the win, dropping Palomar to 4-2 for the season.

Sam Hunter had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Coast, while Isaac Padilla came off the bench and and contributed 22 points and five rebounds in just 19 minutes. Coast controlled the boards (44-31 rebounding edge) and shot an impressive 51.5% from the floor (35-of-68).

The next night, Coast came up short against Miramar College as the Jets won 72-59. It was a rough first half for the Pirates, who headed into the locker room down 42-25 at the break. Miramar was never threatened the rest of the way and earned the victory over Coast.

Hunter was again the top scorer with 18 points, while Mitchell Rawlins added 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. 

Coast will return to action on Thursday in the opening round of the West L.A. College tournament against L.A. Valley, beginning at 1 p.m. OCC's lone nonconference home game will be on Friday, Dec. 8 against Miramar, beginning at 5 p.m.
