
Chargers Go 2-0 in Doubleheader Matchup
Cypress Starts Conference Play 2-0
IRVINE, CA - Cypress College opened up Orange Empire Conference action Friday at the Great Park in Irvine, taking on Santiago Canyon College and Riverside College.
The Chargers took a 4-1 victory over the Hawks and Tigers to move to a 3-3 record on the year.
Against Santiago, Zoe Ziegler and Keilyn Flores played three sets. In the first set the Chargers started slow losing 8-21. Zoe Ziegler and Keilyn Flores then came back in the second set battling to a 22-20 victory. In the last set the pair couldn't hold on and fell 9-15. The No.2 pair Hailey Church and Hannah Higuera swept SCC with 21-11 and 21-6 victories. The last pair consisting of Audrey Perez and Kaitlyn Casino also swept the Hawks 21-16 and 21-13.
In the second match against Riverside College, Zoe Ziegler and Keilyn Flores won 2 out of the 3 sets played (18-21)(21-18)(15-12). Pair No.2 Hailey Church and Hannah Higuera repeated their great play taking control of the first two sets. (21-6)(21-11) The 3rd pair Audrey Perez and Kaitlyn Casino couldn't keep the team's momentum going as they suffered a loss to RCC 16-21 and 20-22. The last pair consisted of Amanda Kalpakoff and Jasmine Kastner played their first match of the day against Riverside and finished with winning 2 of the 3 sets for the Chargers. They started strong with a 21-8 win in set 1 then losing 20-22 in set 2. Together they battled hard to win the last set for the Chargers which ended in a 15-9 victory.
UP NEXT: With these doubleheader wins, the Chargers look to then improve to 4-3 on the season facing Orange Coast College on Friday March 7.
