Pirates cruise with wins over Cypress, Golden West
LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team picked up a couple of impressive wins on Friday over Cypress (4-1) and Golden West (5-0) in an Orange Empire Conference tri-match played at Rosie's Dog Beach.
In the win over the Chargers, Coast (6-1 overall, 4-0 in the OEC) picked up straight-set wins from Jordan Packer/Keyla Ihring (21-12, 21-15), Sophia Wirtzer/Camryn Hayek (21-14, 21-10) and Reagan Anderson/Ashlyn Couch (21-5, 21-5). In the No. 3 match, OCC's Madison Hopkins/Nika Safavi needed to overcome a second-set loss for a 22-20, 17-21, 15-7 win.
There were two matches that went to a third set in OCC's battle with the rival Rustlers, but the Pirates prevailed in both of them to complete the 5-0 sweep. At No. 1, Packer/Ihring dropped the first set before rallying for a 17-21, 21-19, 15-9 win. The same held true at No. 2 as the duo of Lola Fernsten/Briana Bowman fell 21-18 in the opener, only to rally in the final two sets, 21-12, 15-10.
Hopkins/Safavi won in straight sets, 21-18, 21-11, as did Wirtzer/Hayek (21-11, 21-7) and Anderson/Couch (21-6, 21-9).
OCC will take on another conference duo -- Santiago Canyon and Santa Ana -- on Friday at the Newland Courts in Huntington Beach, beginning at 10 a.m.
