HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Golden West College Rustlers erupted for 16 runs on 12 hits to cruise past the visiting San Diego Mesa College Olympians, 16-4, on Tuesday afternoon. A five-run first inning set the tone as Golden West never looked back, improving to 2-3 on the season.
Golden West wasted no time jumping on Olympians' starter Finn Royer (0-1), who lasted just one inning. Bryan Martinez got things started with a two-run single, and a wild pitch brought another run home before Kevin Villegas capped off the inning with a two-run single to make it 5-0.
The Rustlers tacked on two more in the third, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Villegas and a run scoring on a wild pitch. By the fifth inning, they had blown the game open to 11-0, with Zack Burrow delivering a two-run single and Roman Meyers adding an RBI double.
JJ Robles (1-1) was dominant on the mound, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two. San Diego Mesa managed to break through in the sixth with a pair of runs on a hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded walk, but reliever Travis Maxwell settled things down with 3.2 solid innings.
Golden West sealed the win with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from EJ Barnes and a two-run double from Isaac Ocampo. San Diego Mesa pushed across two late runs in the ninth, for the 16-4 final.
Next Golden West goes on the road to San Diego City College on Thursday for a 1pm start.
