Women's volleyball team falls in four in the 2024 opener

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team traveled to Moorpark on Friday for its 2024 season opener.

The Lasers played Moorpark in three of the four sets, but came up short, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13.

Both teams struggled some offensively in the first match of the year with Irvine Valley hitting .066 as a team and Moorpark hitting .131 as a team.

Returning all-conference player Audrey Fowler led the Lasers with nine kills and 19 digs. She played libero for IVC's team that won an Orange Empire Conference title and made the semifinals of the 3C2A State Championship tournament.

But this season, Fowler, who also won a OEC individual pairs title this spring, has moved to an outside hitter spot with the indoor squad.

Freshman opposite Hailey Oldham added six kills and 12 digs, freshman middle blocker Valeria Leon contributed six blocks and setter Emmi Scelzo recorded 10 digs and ran the offense with 21 assists.

The Lasers are led this season by first-year head coach Alissa Blevins. She was a former starting setter at Irvine Valley.

IVC plays again next Wednesday, hosting its first match of the season against College of the Canyons at 5 p.m.
