COD Women’s Soccer rolls as Felix grabs hat trick over Dons, 9-0

COD (5-1) got off to a quick start and did not look back as five different Roadrunners scored, including a hat trick by Amerie Felix and multi-goal games from two others, knocking off the Santa Ana Dons (1-3), 9-0.

The Roadrunners played against the Santa Ana Dons for the first time in program history in 2019 and hold a 2-1-1 overall record against the Dons. Today's game set a record for the most goals scored by the Roadrunners over Santa Ana in program history and their most lopsided victory at home since September 20, 2022, when Desert walloped the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park, 9-0. Desert has a 2-0 record against the Dons at home.

Freshman goal keeper Perla Melchor-Hernandez (Thermal Coachella Valley) started the match and only faced one shot on goal in the first half and freshman goal keeper Zamara Cervantes (Thermal Coachella Valley) preserved the clean sheet by playing the second half.

Desert got onto the scoreboard first in the 3rd minute when sophomore defender Montserrath Salazar (Indio H.S.) lobbed a pass to sophomore forward Dalaina Johnson (Cathedral City H.S.), who scored her second goal of the season, by pounding a shot past the Dons keeper to give the home side a 1-0 advantage. Roadrunners would strike again four minutes later as freshman defender Alondra Cebrera (Thermal Coachella Valley) passed the ball to freshman forward Angelica Leal (Thermal Coachella Valley) getting her second goal of the season and bringing the lead over the Dons to 2-0. After a tough back and forth freshman forward Amerie Felix (Thermal Desert Mirage) scored her first of three goals on the day in the 20th minute off of a penalty kick, for 3-0 lead. For her second goal of the season Felix was aided by Salazar in the 33rd minute for another shot that snuck past the Dons goalkeeper bringing the Desert lead up to 4-0. On the other side of the second half, the Roadrunners would strike again in the 58th minute, as sophomore midfielder Jenelle Agresor (Palm Springs H.S.) would find freshman defender Nyla Clarke (Lakewood H.S.) in front of the Dons net giving the Roadrunners a 5-0 edge. Felix came in with her third goal of the game in the 70th minute aided by freshman midfielder Melanie Ramos-Brizuela (Rancho Mirage H.S.) for a sizeable lead with 6-0. Freshman midfielder Ruby Segura (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would add a pair of goals, one in the 82nd and 90th minutes.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be four straight road games against teams in the South Coast Conference, beginning with the East Los Angeles Huskies of Monterey Park on September 19. Desert first competed against the Huskies in 2006 and hold an 1-1 overall record against them. The Roadrunners, last win in the series was in 2022, but the Roadrunners have never played in Monterey Park. The next home game for the Roadrunners will be in 28 days, on October 10, when Desert hosts the Norco Mustangs in Inland Empire Athletic Conference play. Desert first competed against the Mustangs in 2014 and hold an 4-3-1 overall record against them. The Roadrunners, last win in the series was in 2022, holding a 2-0-1 record against the Mustangs in Palm Desert.
