The Golden West College women's volleyball team closed out their home schedule while celebrating their four sophomores in dominant fashion, defeating Cypress College in straight sets, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21. The victory improves the Rustlers to 10-12 overall and 8-7 in Orange Empire Conference play, while the Chargers drop to 12-13 overall and 9-6 in conference action.
Golden West set the tone early with an efficient .345 hitting percentage in the opening set. Key contributions from Maren Matthews and Hayden Johnston helped the Rustlers claim the first frame 25-21.
The second set was another display of consistency for Golden West, as they hit .316 as a team. Matthews continued to shine, while setter Cassandra Zoellers orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out 35 assists to guide the Rustlers to a 25-19 win.
In the third, Cypress attempted to mount a comeback, but Golden West's defense, led by Elyse Varipapa and Hayden Johnston, held firm. The Rustlers closed out the match with a 25-21 victory, securing the sweep.
Matthews was unstoppable on the outside, while Johnston anchored both the front and back rows with her dual contributions in kills and digs. Larson provided consistent support offensively, and Zoellers' court vision and accuracy kept the Rustler attack in rhythm.
The Rustlers will look to carry this momentum into their final regular season match at Riverside City on Friday November 15 at 6pm.
