Cats cup runneth over at Mt. SAC

The Saddleback women's soccer team captured the Nike / Azteca Soccer Classic Tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over Lake Tahoe College on Sunday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California.  The Bobcats controlled play throughout in improving to 3-0 on the season.

Saddleback had arguably its toughest test of the season on Sunday, facing a Lake Tahoe College program that has won four straight Golden Valley Conference titles and appeared in the state tournament in 2019.  The Bobcats passed with flying colors, controlling play against the Coyotes throughout the contest in 95-degree heat.

Saddleback and Lake Tahoe went to the half tied at 0-0, with Saddleback holding a 7-2 advantage in total shots.  The Bobcats finally broke through in the 50th minute when Averee Campos found the upper left corner of the net off a pass from Lizbeth De Loera for a 1-0 lead.

Saddleback was solid in the defensive end, allowing just a handful of shots from Lake Tahoe.  The Coyotes did have one great scoring chance go awry when a shot went off the crossbar with under 10 minutes remaining, thus preserving the shutout.

Jamie-Lynne Clark played the entire game in goal for Saddleback, finishing with three saves for the game.  Clark and Bobcats now have three straight shutouts to start the season.   It is the second straight season that Saddleback has recorded a shutout in the first three games.  The Bobcats recorded a record 14 straight shutouts to start the 2021 campaign.

Saddleback will play its home-opener on Friday when it hosts San Diego Mesa College at 3:00 PM inside the stadium.
