Jaylene Oviedo Shoots the Lights Out as Chargers Roll, 68-47

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers (12-9, 4-2 OEC) hosted the Mira Costa Spartans (8-10) in a non-conference matchup on Saturday night. Jaylene Oviedo had a night to remember as she sunk 11 three-pointers, a new Cypress Women's Basketball record, to lead the Chargers to a 68-47 victory. 

Oviedo was the star of the night as she scored 39 points (12-22 FG) sinking her 11 threes on 20 attempts. Malia Goldsmith continued her offensive dominance as she finished with 17 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. Carley Busch was strong on the glass as she finished with seven rebounds of her own. The Chargers shot 38% from the three-point line as a team, finishing with 15 makes which is also a season high.

The Chargers picked up their defensive intensity in the first quarter as they held the Spartans to 8 points. Oviedo scored 12 of the 15 points in the quarter for the Chargers as all 15 points came from distance for Cypress. Acacia Denton found her stroke for Mira Costa in the second quarter scoring seven points and bringing the Spartans within nine at halftime. After a 17 point second quarter for Mira Costa, the Chargers tighted up defensively only allowing 22 points in the entire second half. The Chargers blew the game wide open scoring 16 points in third quarter, followed by 18 in the fourth. Cypress would coast to a 68-47 victory as they bounced back strong from their loss on Friday night (1/28) versus the #7 Irvine Valley Lasers. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers will enter February for the final stretch of the 2022 season. Cypress will play six games as they will tip-off the month playing host to the Fullerton Hornets on Wednesday, February 2nd. The game will begin at 7pm, spectators are permitted, but they must show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test within 72 hours of the game.
