Falcons sweep past Santa Ana for second straight win

In their second road match of the season, the Cerritos College volleyball team needed just an hour to sweep past host Santa Ana College, 25-14, 25-12, 25-19 on Wednesday. The Falcons (2-0) will continue the start of their season with a third road match in a row, as they travel to Golden West College for another non-conference match at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

It was Falcon dominance from the outset, as they controlled the net and kept rallies alive with their back row strength. Cerritos scored points in bunches and opened up big leads in each of the first two sets to take a commanding lead. They extended their bench in the third set and still had enough to put away the Dons.

Five different players had at least five kills, with nine of the players registering at least one dig.

Sophomore Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) led the Falcons with eight kills and also added five digs, with sophomore Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS/Long Beach City College) posting seven kills, six digs, four service aces and two solo blocks during the balanced attack. Sophomores Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Sydney May (Los Alamitos HS/UC Santa Cruz) each finished with six kills, with May sharing the setting duties and dished out 16 assists. Sophomore setter Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) accounted for 19 assists, with sophomore Lillianna Peterson (California HS) recording five kills and did not commit an error.

Leading the way in the back row was sophomore Priscilla Castillo (Schurr HS), who had 19 digs, while freshman Evelyn Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) played the final two sets and produced four kills.
