Pirates bounce back with sweep over Rustlers
COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team started up a new win streak on Friday night with a convincing 25-13, 25-5, 25-20 Orange Empire Conference win over rival Golden West, inside the Peterson Gym.
Nika Safavi led the Pirates (11-2, 3-1 in the OEC) with 12 kills, while Kennedy Cutler and Caprie Troccoli each had six, helping Coast bounce back from its lone conference setback in their last match against Riverside.
In the opener, Coast set the tone for the night right away, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. After a brief back-and-forth of points, Coast used a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 20-6.
It was more of the same for the Pirates in the second set as they knocked down 19 of the first 23 points of the set, putting GWC (4-8, 2-3) in a gigantic hole in the second set.
Golden West bounced back and stayed close to the Pirates for most of the third set and led midway through, 16-15, before OCC used a pair of kills from Cutler and Safavi down the stretch to cap off a 10-4 run.
OCC will return to action on Wednesday at Cypress College before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against Santa Ana. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
