Lutz blast helps Comets sink Pirates

COSTA MESA, CA (2/28/2025) – Breanna Lutz provided three hits for the second straight game as the Palomar College softball team won its second road game in as many days with a 6-2 victory Friday at Orange Coast College.

Lutz, a sophomore third baseman, was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning which broke open a one-run game as the No. 5-ranked Comets boosted their record to 10-2 with the nonconference win.

Sophomore right-hander Nevaeh Haywood pitched five strong innings to improve her record to 5-2. Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla pitched two scoreless innings in relief as Palomar ended a six-game win streak for No. 13 Orange Coast (8-2).

A two-out infield single by freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong led to the Comets' first run in the top of the second inning. Taylor advanced two bases on a passed ball and scored on an infield single by freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia.

A hit batter with two outs preceded a two-run home run in the bottom of the second which gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead, but the visitors quickly went back in front in the top of the third when singles by Lutz and freshman first baseman Zoe Karam were followed by a run-scoring double to left field by sophomore catcher Isabella De Filippis and an RBI single to left by freshman designated player Alexis Huey as Palomar
assumed a 3-2 advantage.

The one-run margin lingered until the sixth inning, which began with singles by Garcia and freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez. A sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez advanced freshman pinch-runner Dominique Garcia and Gonzalez. The two baserunners were forced to hold on an infield groundout, but Lutz followed with her second home run of the season to provide the insurance cushion.

The Orange Coast home run in the second inning was the only hit allowed by Haywood, who had three strikeouts and no walks. Bedolla allowed a leadoff single in the sixth before striking out the next five batters she faced, including the side swinging in the sixth and the first two batters looking in the seventh before a flyout to Garcia in right field ended the contest.

Palomar has another non-conference game at No. 4 Cerritos on March 1 before returning home March 4 for a PCAC matchup against San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m.
