Pirates' press prevails in 84-38 win over Tigers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team used a smothering defense to help the Pirates cruise to an 84-38 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Riverside City College on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Coast clamped down during the Tigers' possessions and forced 33 turnovers which led to a 44-4 advantage in the "points off turnovers" category.

The defense also forced the Tigers into a chilly night shooting from the floor (15-of-55) for 27.3 percent.

Meanwhile, the state's fourth-ranked Pirates (15-3, 4-0 in the OEC) found some red-hot shooting early on and pulled out to a 29-6 first-quarter lead. In that opening 10 minutes of action, Bridgette McIntyre scored 14 of her game-high 26 points. Ashari Cassell had 19 points and seven assists, while Jordan Arreola added 18 points and four assists.

Down low, the combination of Alyssa Dreessen and Myia Collins combined for 13 points and 18 rebounds, with Dreessen nabbing a team-best eight steals and Collins dishing out five assists.

For the Tigers (9-8, 2-2), Antieya Brown was a force down low with 17 points and 17 rebounds, but the rest of her RCC teammates combined to shot just 25.7% from the floor.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Friday against Fullerton College at 7 p.m.
