HUNTINGTON BEACH - So far this season the achilles' heel for the Marauder softball team has been pitching and fielding.
On Friday, AVC pitching gave up a total of more than 20 walks in two losses at the Golden West Tournament. The Marauders lost two more games on Saturday against East LA College, 8-5, and San Bernardino Valley College, 8-2. AVC rebounded on Sunday with a 3-2 victory against host Golden West, snapping its four game losing skid.
Against Golden West, Angelica Ochoa was the offensive bright spot for the Marauders as she knocked in all three AVC runs. With the score tied 2-2, in the top of the fifth inning, Ochoa drove in Erica Serfoss for the go-ahead run. The pitching was solid as Maria Acosta only gave up two runs on only three hits, however, she did walk six batters.
In the game with East LA, Rebecca Whelchel was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Toni Hutnick added two RBI for AVC. Serfoss was also 2-for-4 and Priscella Panizo was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Marauders dug themselves a 7-2 deficit, which they could not recover.
AVC's defense hurt them against San Bernardino as it committed four errors on the afternoon. The Marauders had trouble with Wolverines' pitcher Terilyn Baude who kept AVC hitters off balance as she scattered only five hits, one of which came off the bat of Whelchel who singled scoring Ochoa and Panizo, for the only two AVC runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
