Pirates sweep past Griffins

Pirates sweep past Griffins

COSTA MESA -- It was smooth sailing for the Orange Coast College Pirates on Wednesday night as they rolled past visiting Grossmont College in three straight sets in a nonconference matchup inside the Peterson Gym.

Landon Tobias had 10 kills with only one hitting error to lead the Pirates (6-1) to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-23 victory over the Griffins (0-5).

Will Anderson was close behind Tobias with nine kills and three aces, while in the middle, Zach Weston pounded eight kills. Setter Grayson Kling dished out 31 assists.

After a pair of stress-free sets, it was a tougher battle for OCC in the third set as the Pirates tried new combinations on the floor.

Coast led 9-8 early on in the set, but the hitting of Grossmont's Matthew Jones kept the Griffins close. He ripped 12 of his 15 kills in the final set alone and the Griffins carried a slim 23-21 lead late into the set.

An errant serve evened the match at 23 before Brady Terjeson stepped up with a huge solo block to put the Pirates in front, forcing Grossmont into a timeout.

The break had no effect on the Pirates as an emphatic Anderson kill put a quick end to the match.

Coast will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday against San Diego Mesa College, beginning at 6 p.m. Reminder, fans are allowed inside, but masks MUST be worn at all times.
