Men's soccer team drops tight OEC match at Saddleback

Irvine Valley's men's soccer team dropped another one-goal game, falling at Saddleback, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match Friday afternoon.

It was the Lasers' seventh one-goal defeat this season, including four in conference play.

Irvine Valley's record went to 5-9-1 overall and 3-4-1 in conference. Saddleback moved to 6-4-4 overall and 3-2-3 in OEC play.

Saddleback moved into fourth place in conference with the win.

IVC out-shot the Bobcats, 7-3 in the second half, but couldn't find a tying score.

The Bobcats came out on top after scoring with just over 11 minutes remaining to break a tie.

Saddleback opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Sepand Southehkashan rattled home a rebound after a Kevin Sanchez shot.

The Laers finally caught a break when one of their players was taken down in the box in the 50th minute. Freshman midfielder Luke Newman stepped to the spot and beat the Saddleback keeper to the left side to tie the game.

It was Newman's eighth goal of the year and his 22nd point.

The game remained even until the 80th minute when Saddleback broke the stalemate. Sanchez scored the game-winner off an assist from Jason Starcks.

Irvine Valley made a furious charge the rest of the way, but was unable to beat Saddleback keeper Tyler Bourbonnais to tie the game.

Bourbonnais finished with three saves in the contest. Freshman Rolando Hernandez played the whole match in goal for IVC and finished with four saves.

Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday when it hosts Santa Ana at 3 p.m.
