Pirates wrap up amazing 4-0 run through Cuesta Tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- It was a weekend to remember for the Orange Coast College men's water polo team as the Pirates swept through four tough opponents at the Cuesta College Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.

In their opener, the Pirates took on fourth-ranked Mt. San Antonio College and rallied for an 11-9 win over the Mounties. Trailing 7-6 early in the third quarter, the Pirates proceeded to score five of the next six goals of the contest to take an 11-8 lead midway into the fourth quarter. From there, Coast held off Mt. SAC and earned the impressive win. Mason Parker, Jacob Muller and Caden Carpenter each had three goals for Coast, while in goal, Roman Christenot was solid, allowing just nine goals with 11 saves against a tough Mountie squad.

In the afternoon session, Coast rolled past American River, 12-6, then, opened Saturday's competition with an 11-5 win over L.A. Valley.

In the tourney finale for the Pirates (11-4), they battled fifth-ranked Long Beach City College and needed some extra time to pull out a 12-11 overtime win over the Vikings. In the OT, Coast took an 11-10 lead on a 6-on-5 goal when Julien Cassell-Cornet found Muller with the go-ahead goal. Long Beach tied things back up at 11 and it looked like a second overtime was on the agenda, but the Pirates found some last-second magic for the win. Carmelo Bangs sent a perfect pass to Carpenter, who buried the game-winner with 2 seconds left to stun the Vikings and give OCC the hard-fought victory.

Coast will return home and take on Saddleback College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a crucial Orange Empire Conference matchup.
