Marauder Softball went 1-1 in a non-conference doubleheader against Santiago Canyon at home on Saturday.
Before getting underway, a packed crowd was on hand to show their appreciation for 11 sophomores. Kylie Zinn, Cadence Crampton, Gianna Mancilla, Natasha Arroyo, Annalise Wagner, Emily Centeno, Denise Carrillo, Jayda Williams, Haeven Chavira, Mac Brown, and Bella Escobar will all be moving on after this season.
Once the action started, the Marauders wasted no time taking charge in game 1 as Natalia Hernandez homered in the 1st inning. In the 3rd inning, Jolene Miramontes, Kylie Zinn, and Annalise Wagner each recorded an RBI to put AVC ahead 4-0. The Hawks responded with 2 runs in the 5th, but AVC kept the game out of reach with a 2-RBI home run by Kylie Zinn in the bottom of the inning and a solo home run by Mac Brown in the 6th. Annalise Wagner pitched 5 innings with 4 strikeouts, and Helena Loera struck out two in two innings of relief as the Marauders took the first game 7-2.
Game 2 was a much closer contest, with Santiago Canyon winning 7-6. This time, the Hawks scored first with a run in the first inning. Antelope Valley answered with an RBI single by Natasha Arroyo. The Hawks then scored with a home run in the third. But AVC answered again, with Arroyo and Rebecca Sanchez both hitting solo bombs in the bottom of the inning. Santiago went up 4-3 two innings later, but again AVC would respond. Kylie Zinn hit her second homer of the day, followed by Natalia Hernandez's home run in the 6th to give the Marauders a 6-4 lead. Needing just three outs to complete the sweep, AVC couldn't hold on and gave up 3 runs in the last inning.
Zinn finished the day with 5 RBI off 3 hits. Hernandez had 3 hits and 2 RBI, while Arroyo recorded 2 hits and 2 RBI. In addition to her pitching duties, Wagner went 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Emily Centeno contributed 3 hits and an RBI, while Jolene Miramontes, Angelina Quezada, Cadence Crampton, and Gianna Mancilla also recorded hits.
AVC finishes the regular season with a doubleheader against Cerritos on Tues. 4/23, starting at 12:00 pm.
