Cabrera, Pirates bomb away on Knights in 99-49 victory

COSTA MESA -- It was a first half to remember for Karina Cabrera and the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates routed visiting San Diego City early and cruised to a 99-49 nonconference win on Wednesday, inside the Peterson Gym.

Cabrera, who struggled with her shot on Sunday against Citrus College (1-for-12, 0-7 from 3-point range), had NONE of that against the Knights, scoring 35 first-half points and finishing with 38, sparked by a school-record 12 3-pointers. Her 12 treys broke last year's mark of 11, set by Kyoka Ohara on Nov. 20, 2021 against Southwestern. Cabrera was 13-of-20 from the floor and 12-of-18 from downtown. Oh, and she also had seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Annie Trinh added 15 points and six assists, while Meghan McIntyre had 12 points, four rebounds and eight assists in just 26 minutes of action. All 10 players took the floor for the Pirates (10-0), with Ashlee Dorantes leading the reserves with 10 points and six rebounds, followed by Jade Quinonez, Emmiline Law (six points) and Noelle Duffy (five points).

Caitlyn McCoy and Cusha Landry each had 11 points for the Knights (5-6).

Coast outscored SDCC by a whopping 44 points in the first half and carried a 60-16 cushion into the locker room at the half. The story of that opening pair of quarters was Cabrera, followed up a 15-point first quarter with a 20-point second quarter, shooting 12-of-15 from the floor and 11-of-14 from downtown, all in the first half!

Up next for the state's fourth-ranked Pirates is another home matchup, against No. 10 Long Beach City, on Tuesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
