Dons Sweep San Diego Mesa in Doubleheader

SANTA ANA, Calif. - SAC Softball collected two big wins as they hosted the San Diego Mesa Olympians (6-4) in a doubleheader on a drizzly Thursday.

In game one, the Dons (5-3) held on to win a 3-2 thriller despite a late rally by SD Mesa.

Santa Ana jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Yasmine Garcia walked with the bases loaded to bring in Mia Luna. Karen Vasquez then followed that with a two RBI double to left field, giving the Dons a 3-0 advantage.

Vasquez also held her own in the pitchers circle, earning her second win of the season after striking out two in  five and a third innings. Kalani Gonzales was inserted in the sixth and gave the Dons an inning and two thirds before giving the ball back to Vasquez.

San Diego Mesa scored their two runs in the top of the seventh and were threatening to tie it with the bases loaded and one out. But Vasquez induced a pop out and a ground out to close the door for the Dons, snapping a two game losing streak.

Game two was a wild affair with rain showers affecting play and both teams posting eight run innings.

SAC took another early lead with their big rally coming in the first. But the momentum shifted as the Olympians chipped away until leaping ahead in the fifth inning, racking up eight runs to go up 11-10.

To their credit, the Dons stayed the course and responded in the bottom half of the inning.

Aidee Mendoza drove in the game tying run with a double to center fielder before Grace Potter came up clutch with a two RBI, go-ahead double. Yasmine Garcia and Giordana Tully added on with RBI singles to cap Santa Ana's five run inning, giving them a 15-11 lead.

Vasquez picked up another win as she posted four and two third innings while Gonzales added two and a third innings out of the bullpen.

Santa Ana will now prepare to be on the road for the next month starting with Mt. San Jacinto College on Thursday, February 13th.
