Citrus College got the 2021 season underway Friday, grabbing back-to-back victories at the Orange Coast Tournament. The Owls dominated with a 20-6 win over Golden West College, before taking down Palomar College in the nightcap 19-11 to start the season 2-0.
Seven different Owls scored in the opener, with Teghan Miller leading Citrus with five. Gabriella Terry and Sey Currie each added four goals as well.
The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead within the first three minutes of action of the game. Currie got the ball rolling with a goal in the opening 20 seconds, followed by a goal from Mia Meldrum and back-to-back goals from Miller.
Citrus didn't let its foot off the gas and upped its lead to 11-1 at halftime. Miller scored a hat trick in the second period alone, while Alyssa Woody and Currie also got in on the scoring action.
Things slowed a little in the third as the Owls were held to just three goals, but Citrus tacked on six more in the fourth to secure the 20-6 landside victory.
In the nightcap, things started quiet as Citrus held a 2-1 lead after the first period. The Owls tacked on six more goals in the second, but Palomar kept on their tail to trail 8-6 at the half.
Coming out of the break, Citrus poured on the offense. Miller scored half of her goals in the third to put the Owls up 13-7 just over halfway through the period. Terry added another two goals in the frame, while Averi Bishop rattled in another goal to increase Citrus' lead to 16-8 heading into the final quarter.
Terry scored two goals in the fourth – with another from Currie – to move her tally to six in the game. Miller also netted six goals and had three steals in the 19-11 victory over Palomar.
Citrus continues the OCC Tournament Saturday, looking to keep its strong play going. The Owls take on Long Beach City College first at 10:00 a.m., followed by a 1:45 p.m. game against Fullerton College.
