Owls Fall to Pirates in Season Opener

Women's Basketball hosted two-time state champions, Orange Coast College in the Owls' season opener last night, resulting in a 61-49 defeat.
Citrus College opens the year at 0-1 while Orange Coast College moves to 3-1 on the season.
The Owls were able to make it a tough game for the Pirates in the first quarter as they were only down five points going into the second quarter.
Orange Coast College outscored Citrus 21-10 in the second quarter giving them a sizeable 35-19 lead at halftime.
The Owls fought back to begin the third quarter by going on an 11-0 run to get within five points as the score was 35-30. The Pirates responded with their own 13-0 run to go up 48-30 going into the fourth quarter.
Citrus competed hard in the fourth quarter but ended up losing the game 61-49.
The Owls were led by Jolleen Olia with 19 points, three steals and two assists. Leilani Argueta added 12 points on 5-11 from the field and added five boards and one block. Samantha Martinez had a game-high 20 rebounds while also recording a game-high six assists. Breanna Escobedo and Kristin Morella each chipped in eight points.
Although the Owls did not get the result they were hoping for, they held OCC to 30.4% from the field and 13.9% from three but were outrebounded 37-47 and allowed the Pirates to score 23 points off turnovers.
Citrus College will look to earn a win as they travel to Chaffey College this Saturday, November 9th for a 1 p.m. game.
