
No. 3 Cypress Chargers Edge No. 6 Saddleback Bobcats in OEC Tournament Opener
The Chargers staved off a late comeback by the Saddleback Bobcats to secure a 67-64 victory at home.
CYPRESS, CA - The No. 3 Cypress Chargers advanced to the second round of the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) tournament with a hard-fought victory over No. 6 Saddleback Bobcats on Thursday evening.
The Chargers demonstrated composure in a back-and-forth game, relying on efficient shooting and strong teamwork to secure the win.
Cypress pulled away late with a pivotal 9-0 run in the final four minutes, sparked by a clutch three-pointer from Michael Wright, to extend their lead to 63-54. The late cushion proved critical, as Saddleback surged in the final moments, cutting the deficit to just three points with a chance to tie. However, the Chargers' defense held firm, sealing the victory.
Michael Wright led the Chargers' offensive charge with 16 points, including four crucial three-pointers, while Peyton Guerrero added 14 points and four rebounds. Higgy Katoa was a force at the free-throw line, going a perfect 8-for-8 and finishing with 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Vincent Albertini dominated the boards with 10 rebounds to go along with eight points, giving Cypress the edge on second-chance opportunities.
UP NEXT: The Chargers will face the winner of Santiago Canyon versus Riverside City game for round two of the OEC tournament on Wednesday, February 19.
