Men's soccer loses heartbreaker in final seconds at Fullerton

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team was five minutes and some extra time away from capturing its first victory in Orange Empire Conference play last Friday night at Fullerton.

Freshman midfielder Luke Newman scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute to give IVC a 1-0 lead. It was Newman's team-leading fifth goal and 15 point of the season.

But Fullerton scored with 1:19 left in regulation and then with seconds left on the clock the Hornets scored again to stun the Lasers.

Fullerton held on through extra time.

Irvine Valley's record went to 2-8-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference. Fullerton improved to 7-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the OEC.

Pressed for time, the Hornets answered the call scoring a goal to tie it up with 1:19 left on the clock. After a handball call, Max Ron was able to find the back of the net from 12 yards out.

And with seconds left on the clock, Fullerton's Andrew Arreola took a long toss-in from Nathan Giles and punched in a line-drive-shot from 35 yards to win the match in dramatic fashion.

Irvine Valley freshman keeper Josh Simonton played all 90 minutes and finished with four saves.

IVC plays again next Tuesday in a conference match at Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m.
