Six-run seventh propels Pirates past Tigers

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College softball used a six-run seventh-inning to pull past Riverside City College, 8-3, on Wednesday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Trailing, 3-2 and just two outs from a disappointing upset loss, the Pirates (17-19, 9-12 in the OEC) found some offensive magic at just the right time.

Julia Douglass started the comeback with a single to center. Hailey Pichardo followed with a single to center of her own, moving Douglass to second. Taylor Andolsek loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch, still, with only one out.

Ashlee Kean hit a grounder to the RCC shortstop and the play was mishandled, allowing Douglass to score, tying the game at 3.

Gillian Gordan then put the Pirates in front for good with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Andolsek and Pichardo to put Coast up, 5-3.

Gianna Gozo followed with an infield single that scored Kean and after a throwing error allowed Gordon to touch home, Coast was in command, 7-3. Emilie Lapena closed out the scoring three batters later with an RBI-single to center that scored Gozo.

Kean kept the Tigers (11-28, 3-18) off the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth to earn her 10th win of the season. She went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Kean also went 2-for-4 with a double and triple, three runs scored and one RBI.

Coast pounded out 14 hits in the win, led by a 3-for-5 performance by Lapena. Douglass, Pichardo, Gordon and Gozo also each had two hits each.

Up next for the Pirates will be the Orange Empire Conference Tournament, with opponents, dates and times to be determined. Log on to www.occpirateathletics.com for the latest tourney information as it becomes available.
