Walnut, Calif. – The No. 7 ranked Mt. SAC Softball Team emerged victorious over No. 9 ranked Cypress College with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday, February 5. Following this win, the Mounties improve their record to 4-2, while the Chargers level out at 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mounties ignited their offense in the second inning when Samantha Chavez singled to center field. Isabella Guerrero, who stepped in to pinch run for Chavez, stole second base to get in scoring position. A fielding error by the Chargers' pitcher allowed Mia Martin to reach first base and Guerrero to cross home plate for the game's first run. Martin followed up with a stolen base and later scored on a single by Samantha Orozco, giving Mt. SAC a 2-0 lead.
The Mounties continued their momentum in the third inning with a sacrifice fly from Amanda Porterfield that brought home Audrey White. In the fourth, Katie Griego's groundout allowed Martin to score, while Sarai Raygoza advanced to third, stretching the lead to 4-0.
But the Chargers initiated a comeback in the top of the fifth with a single from Nanea Kyle, while Makayla Motis and Carly Parmenter were walked to load the bases. A hit from Tina Payne drove in Motis and Kyle, cutting the Mounties' lead to 4-2.
However, Mt. SAC answered back in the bottom of the fifth when Morgan Kneubuhler capitalized on a Chargers' catching error, scoring an unearned run to extend the lead to 5-2.
Guerrero dominated in the circle for the Mounties, pitching all seven innings. She allowed just four hits and two earned runs while recording five walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Giselle Delcastillo took the loss for Cypress, pitching 4.1 innings with eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout. The Mounties capitalized on their speed, using three stolen bases to stay in scoring position and sustain their lead.
