A relatively routine away win at Fullerton college was overshadowed by a late collision and ER visit for visiting forward Nikki Marino.
Thankfully reports are that Marino was discharged Friday evening, and that no ribs were broken in the incident.
Earlier Marino had done damage of her own kind. First, she provided the assist for Kylee Medlin to score the second goal for the Hawks. Then shortly afterwards, Marino was on hand to score from close range. Elyse Valenzuela combined with Megan Llopis down the right hand-side and served for Frida Vizcarra who knocked down the cross for Marino to round out the scoring in the 3-0 victory.
In the opening period, the Hawks never really hit top gear against a stubborn Fullerton Hornets side. Shelby Kain headed powerfully home, only for the goal to be ruled out for an infraction on the Hornets keeper. In the second half, despite SCC continuing to dominate possession, it was the home team who had the earliest opportunity. SCC keeper Savanna Prado came up big for the Hawks from point-blank range.
Vizcarra finally broke the deadlock around the 70 minute-mark following in on a left-footed drive from Kristen Smick (pictured) to open the scoring. As the clock ticked down, SCC finished as comfortable victors.
Thanks go out to the travelling contingent, as well as to the Fullerton College athletic training staff for their care and diligence in dealing with the late injury.
The Hawks play next at home to Orange Coast College on Tuesday, October 4th at 3pm.
