(Fullerton, CA) The Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball Team opened the 2019 season with a, 4-1, nonconference win over host Fullerton College Wednesday morning (2/20).
Three out of the four Mt. SAC pairs won their match in two-game sweeps, plus a forfeit victory in the fitth match gave the Mounties the opening win.
"The team was solid (Wednesday)," second-year Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball Coach Ali Carey-Oliver said. "We communicated well and did a great job of taking care of the ball."
Mt. SAC's No. 4 pair of Jocelyn Portillo/Brianda Valdez picked up the first victory of the day with a powerful win over the Hornets 4's, 21-5, 21-11. "That sparked the rest of the squad," Carey-Oliver said.
Also getting wins were Mt. SAC No. 2's Juliana Gomez/Samantha Neely (21-19, 21-21-16) and No. 3's Lindsey Lane/Alysha Tullar (21-15, 21-15).
No. 5's Macy Barnes/Jessica Morse won by forfeit as the Hornets failed to field a team.
The only setback for the Mounties were the No. 1's Malia Carr/Shaiann Palos, who fell in two close sets, 21-17, 21-19.
Mt. SAC travels to San Diego Friday (2/22) for three matches at San Diego Mesa College vs. Cypress College, Saddleback College and host S.D. Mesa.
