Hawks Cruise Past Santa Ana in Straight Sets
After a heart-pounding, five-set victory over Fullerton last Friday, the Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team looked to ride the momentum in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) showdown against the crosstown rival Santa Ana College Dons. The Hawks continued their hot streak by securing a commanding three-set victory for their second-consecutive conference win.
The Hawks have tallied four wins on the season with back-to-back conference victories behind an offensive grouping that spreads the ball.
Sophomore setter Peyton Speakman is the one sparking the kills by lofting up 37 assists while locating five different weapons. Speakman, who ranks third in the conference with a 8.40 assists-per-set clip, has tallied 30 or more assists in four games and has fell below the 20 assist mark just one time this season. She also ranks eighth in the conference with 252 assists.
Speakman's go-to weapon is sophomore Chelsea Riedel. Riedel, who ranks tops in the conference with 4.69 kills-per-set and eighth in the conference with 136 total kills, finished with 19 kills in the victory to go along with a service ace and to solo blocks.
Sophomore Sophie Ziglinski hammered home eight kills on 17 attempts complimented by a block, while freshman Riley Bingel put together an impressive .636 hitting percentage that featured seven kills. Sophomore Ashlyn Smith finished with six kills and two service aces.
