Tigers’ Timely Hitting and Solid Pitching Return in 4-2 Home Win over Cypress
RIVERSIDE –With the return of timely hitting and solid pitching, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers men's baseball team eked out a 4-2 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) home win over the visiting Cypress College Chargers Tuesday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.
The win for Riverside City (12-5, 2-1 OEC) was its sixth in its last seven games. Cypress fell to 10-5, 1-2 OEC. In a bit of a coincidence, prior to today's games, all eight teams were 1-1 in conference action.
Once again, it was sophomore third-baseman Ricardo Rodriguez (Moreno Valley – Canyon Springs HS) supplying the game-winning RBI (two) when he slashed a 2-2 pitch for a two-out triple just inside third base, chasing home sophomore 2B Brandon Van Horn (La Canada Flintridge / St. Francis HS), who was hit by a pitch to open the fifth inning, and freshman DH David Schuknecht (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS / U. of Arizona), who drew a two-out walk to set the stage for Rodriguez, who finished with two hits in four at-bats. .
Cypress pushed across go-ahead runs in the second and fourth frames, only to see the Tigers tie the game with tallies in the third and fourth.
Sophomore RF Jonathan Torres (Edison HS) tripled and scored in the second, and sophomore DH Blake Davey (Newport Harbor HS) singled and scored an unearned run in the fourth for Cypress.
RCC sophomore transfer LHP Kenny Mathews (Diamond Bar / Diamond Bar HS / CSU Fullerton) tossed a complete game, the Tigers' first of the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and no walks and also had four strikeouts. He needed only 93 pitches (68 strikes) to improve to 1-0 (along with two saves). Cypress starting sophomore RHP Nick Rogowski (Woodbridge, VA) went the first 5-1/3 innings and allowed all four runs (all earned) on six hits and one walk and saw his record fall to 3-1.
Another quick game was played as this one took only 2:03 to play.
Both teams continue OEC play on Thursday, Mar. 7, at 2 p.m. RCC will visit the Golden West College Rustlers, while Cypress will host the Irvine Valley College Lasers.
