
SBCC spotted Fullerton a 2-0 lead on Wednesday night, then roared back to take the last three sets and pull out its second straight 3-2 victory on the road. The scores were 25-27, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-10.
The fifth-ranked Vaqueros improved to 3-2 and the 10th-ranked Hornets lost their fourth in a row to fall to 2-4.
Sophomore left-hander Calvin Sanborn had a season-high 22 kills and eight digs while hitting at a .318 clip. Trent Lingruen collected 21 kills and seven digs with a .378 hitting percentage.
Luke Hetherington added a season-high 14 kills and three blocks. The 6-5 freshman middle blocker from Camarillo hit a sizzling .619 with just one error in 21 swings. He's hitting .542 for the season.
Setter Kyle Merchen dished out a season-high 51 assists.
"We had a slow start, then we got back to playing our game and took control in the third set," said SBCC coach Jon Newton. "Luke did a great job dominating in the middle and Kyle did a good job of running the offense."
The Vaqueros are playing five of their first six on the road. They were scheduled to host No. 8 Moorpark (6-1) in a Western State Conference opener on Wednesday at 6 p.m. but that match has been moved to Moorpark to accomodate the Vaquero women's basketball team, which is hosting L.A. Valley in a Southern Cal Regional opener on Wednesday night.
