Beach Volleyball: Cerritos wins one of four matches on the week

Competing in four matches over a two-day period, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team picked up one win in those matches. On Thursday at Golden West College, the Falcons (4-4) defeated the host Rustlers, 4-1, while they fell, 4-1 against Ventura College. In their match the next day at Irvine Valley College, Cerritos dropped a 3-2 decision against the host Lasers, while they fell, 5-0 to the University of Saint Katherine, who are ranked #2 in the NAIA. Next up for the Falcons will be matches against both Moorpark College and Bakersfield College on Friday. Although the match will be played at Long Beach City College, the Falcons will serve as the host.

In the win over the Rustlers, Cerritos received wins from the top team of sophomore Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS) and freshman Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS), who were extended to a third set. After opening with a 21-17 win, they dropped a 16-21 decision before securing the win with a 15-12 result in the deciding set. Freshmen Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) registered a straight set win, 21-14, 21-17, with sophomore Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and freshman Emily Gutierrez (Downey HS) also needing a third set to post their win. They dropped the first set, 16-21, but responded with a 21-4 win in the second set and came away with a 15-10 win in the tie-breaker.

Solano and Gutierrez were the lone winners against Ventura, as they turned in a 21-15, 21-13 win.

Against the Lasers the next day, the Falcons dropped the first three matches, but earned wins in the fourth and fifth pairings. Solano and Gutierrez continued to rebound well, as they came back for a 17-21, 21-19, 15-10 win, with the duo of freshman Judit Navarro (Schurr HS) and sophomore Kira Magdaleno (Artesia HS) seeing their first action of the year and earned a 21-16, 21-15 victory.
