Women’s Water Polo Edges Out Palomar, Advances to CCCAA Southern Regional Quarterfinals
It was the highest combined scoring total the Riverside City College women's water polo team had experienced since the third game of the season this afternoon in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern Regional Championships.
The No. 7 Tigers faced off against the No. 10 Palomar College Comets in a game that displayed a high-flying offense. Riverside was able to outplay the Comets on the offensive end leading to a 14-13 triumph.
Freshman Amber Nielsen was the leading scorer for Riverside as seen in five goals. She also added two assists and two steals. Freshman Lauren Nelson followed with four goals and currently holds a 10-game scoring streak. In that streak, she has scored three or more goals in six games.
Freshman Gabriella Fisher earned her 10th win of the season after reeling in 10 saves.
Riverside advances to the quarterfinals where they will take on a familiar foe in the No. 2 Fullerton College Hornets on Friday, November 12 at 5:30 p.m.
The Hornets have been a thorn in the Tigers' side in recent years after they placed second to them in the 2019 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Championships, 2019 CCCAA Southern Regional Championships and the 2019 CCCAA Championships. Riverside will look to break that streak.
The two teams faced off twice in September with Fullerton getting the best of the Tigers each time. They have outscored Riverside 34-13 in the two meetings.
