WBB Weekly Round-up: Women Split a Pair

Joshua Tree, CA - Playing for the first time since February 21, 2020 in front of their home crowd, the Copper Mountain Women's team split their two home games this week to keep their record even at 3-3 on the season. Thursday, November 11 saw the Golden West Rustlers come to the Bell Center. The Rustlers entered the contest 1-0 with a convincing 70 point win just two nights prior. Golden West jumped on the Cacti early with an 8-0 to start the game. They would increase the lead to 10 by the end of the first and pushed it to 14 halfway through the second quarter. The Cacti would come alive and cut the lead to four in the second and trail by 6 at half. CMC women felt like momentum was on their side as the two teams went to the locker room at the half. The second half was all Rustlers though as they outscored the Cacti 56-34 for a 28 point victory. Vianay Gonzales (Indio, CA) led the way for the Cactias she finished with 14 points and added 4 assists. Coy Smith (Yucca Valley, CA) contributed 13 points in the loss. Amy Yellowman (Page, AZ) and Sequoia Owens (Moreno Valley, CA) both came off the bench to add 8 points apiece. Angelica Enriquez (El Paso, TX) had 7 points and a team high 6 rebounds.

Imperial Valley College made the trip to Joshua Tree on Saturday to take on the Fighting Cacti. Imperial Valley was coming off a 6 victory the night before and looking to extend their win streak. The Cacti had other ideas as they looked to get back in the win column. The first quarter saw a few lead changes, but the Cacti found themselves up by 3 at the end of the first. They would never trail again as the ladies went on to a 49-39 victory over Imperial Valley and improve their record to 3-3 on the year. Kaitlyn Juan (Cathedral City, CA) had a team-high 13 points in the game. Coy Smith (Yucca Valley, CA) had 11 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Amy Yellowman (Page, AZ) chipped in 10 points and collected 5 assists on the night. Imia Nicholls (Moreno Valley, CA) had a solid night as she had 6 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Feather McKellips (Palm Desert, CA) was very solid on the defensive end as she tallied 4 steals and 3 rebounds.
