
Pirates go 4-1 at GWC tournament
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team picked up four impressive wins over the weekend at the Golden West Tournament, earning victories over Saddleback (14-13), Cerritos (15-9), Southwestern (20-3) and L.A. Valley (15-14, 2OT).
In the win over the Bobcats, OCC (4-2) trailed 11-9 early in the fourth quarter before back-to-back-to-back goals from Cade Zeilinger pushed the Pirates in front, 12-11. Both teams traded goals, with the Saddleback evening the score at 13 with 57 seconds left, before Zeilinger found the back of the net with 33 seconds remaining for the game-winner.
Zeilinger finished with a team-best six goals for the Pirates, while Carmelo Bangs tossed in three goals and Sawyer McCormick and Otis McAdams each added two goals. Goalie Roman Christenot had eight saves to preserve the win against the Orange Empire Conference rival-Bobcats.
Sam Brooks led the offense for the Pirates over Southwestern with five goals, while Beau Bradley added four and Zeilinger tossed in three.
Against the Falcons, it was a pair of Pirates -- Zeilinger and Jason Honey -- who each had three goals, while McCormick, Bangs and Dylan Morris each added two.
In the double-overtime win over L.A. Valley, Zeilinger had four goals to lead the way, while Honey, Morris and Bangs each added three. Christenot was huge in goal for OCC with 20 saves.
Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home against Cypress College, beginning at 4:15 p.m.
