Who got you into basketball and when did you start playing?

My dad (Irvine Valley coach Jerry Hernandez) got me into basketball and I’ve been playing ever since I can remember. I basically grew up in the gym.

If you weren't playing men’s basketball, what other sport would you want to play at the college level?

If I wasn’t playing basketball, I would want to play soccer or run track at the college level. I always loved soccer growing up and track looks really fun as well.

What makes Coach Jerry Hernandez the type of coach you love to play for?

He’s very passionate about the game and winning means a lot to him. I like playing for someone like that because I am the same way.

What are you majoring in and what's your favorite class?

My major is business and my favorite class is writing.

What is your perfect pre-game meal?

I usually get a Subway sandwich before games.

Walk us through your pre-game warm up.

I will get to the top of the key, make three jumpers going right and then three going left. Then make a few spot three-pointers from the top and the wings. Then I will make a few three’s sliding from spots to where I would be in our offensive content. Then I will make two free throws and stretch.

What are the first 3 songs on your pre-game playlist?

“Jermaine’s Interlude” by J. Cole

“Public Announcement” by Jay Z

“Congratulations” by Post Malone

What do you enjoy doing on your day off?

I love going to the beach and spending time with family and friends. I also love to make music and watch movies.

Who on the team are you closest with?

I am closest with my younger brother Daniel Hernandez (also a player for the Lasers) and teammates Parker Sims and Jack Taylor

What is your leadership style?

I like to lead by example and bring my positive energy to the unit as well as bring my passion. I also make sure to be very vocal as well, though, to make sure we all stay in tune.

Once you're done at Irvine Valley, what do you want to be remembered as?

I’d like to be remembered as a great basketball player, as well as a great student and man.

What is the plan once you graduate?

I would like to play more basketball at a four-year college and get my Bachelor’s degree.

What do you want to say to the fans who have watched you play during your time at Irvine Valley?

I would like to say thank you, especially to my uncles and cousin, who came to a lot of my games. And a huge thank you to my mom (Liz) for making it to just about every game no matter where or how far. She comes to games straight after working 9-12 hour days. I appreciate you more than you will ever know.
