Riverside Favorites in OEC Women’s Water Polo

The Riverside CC Tigers (9-0, 1-0) look to make their run back to the state championship in 2016 after falling to SD Mesa in 2015. With a great mixture of returners and freshman the Tigers look poised to defend their 2015 OEC and SoCal titles. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 147 – 28 with a tough defense and outstanding play by freshman goalie Breana Ortiz.  With an unblemished 9-0 start, Riverside looks to continue the trend entering OEC competition against Orange Coast College Wednesday Sept 28th.

Golden West College (11-0, 2-0) has come out guns blazing with an impressive 11-0 start under new head coach Matt Flesher. Freshman goalie Kailyn Zwaagstra and the Rustler defense has been key to the hot start. The offense has certainly done their part while outscoring their opponents 154 – 47. April Storm Alvarez leads the team with 31 goals.

Fullerton College (7-2, 0-1) is looking to get back to the OEC championship for the third consecutive season after falling to Riverside last season and winning the crown in 2014. The offensive star Gabbi Perez is leading the way for the Hornets with an astounding 54 goals through the first nine matches of the season.

Orange Coast College (2-2, 2-0) are led so far by two freshman Shawna Kedzie with 7 goals, Taylor Madsen 5 goals, and sophomore Lexi Heyerly 6 goals through four matches.

Saddleback College (6-4, 1-1) freshman Maddie Alexander has paced the Gaucho offense with a team high 26 goals and 31 steals. Not to be out shined is freshman goalie Kate Curtis and her 57.6% saves percentage through nine games.

Cypress College (2-5, 0-2) continue to build from their two wins so far again East LA College and El Camino College. Miranda Hernandez and Ailien Nguyenly have led the Chargers offense with 6 goals respectively to start the 2016 campaign.

Santa Ana College (0-2, 0-2) is starting to find a rhythm offensively after opening the season with a shutout loss to Riverside. The Dons followed up the Riverside match with a loss to Orange Coast College 21-9. Kaylah Margo led the Dons with 3 goals and Alejandra Barajas and Kristi Mertins each had 2 goals.
