Irvine Valley & Cypress Earn CCCAA Women's Volleyball State Tournament Bids

Five of the eight regional finals went the distance in an exciting Round 2 of the CCCAA Women's Volleyball Regional Playoffs Saturday night. In the South, #5 Cypress joined top seeds #1 Irvine Valley, #2 Bakersfield, and #3 El Camino as winners to complete the field set for the 2018 CCCAA State Championship Tournament to be held at Solano College Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

No. 1 Irvine Valley d. #9 Ventura, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24: One of the three matches that ended in sweeps (none went four sets), the defending state champion Lasers return to the state tourney with their 17th sweep of the year in defeating the underdog Pirates. For IVC, three players reached double digits in kills with Alaina Gendale and Alyssa Vortouni (plus 15 digs) each hitting 11 and Lea Kruse with 10 (and 10 digs). All-American libero Renata Bath added 12 digs and Truth Hafey set 39 assists. For Ventura, All-Region libero Faith Mackie totaled 22 digs and Shantalle Ruiz scored 10 kills. Orange Empire Conference champion Irvine Valley improved to 20-1 while the Western State Conference North Division winning Pirates successful season ended at 18-5. FULL RELEASE

 

No. 5 Cypress d. #4 Long Beach City, 14-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-22, 15-10: The Chargers never quit, not down 2-0 in sets, and even trailing 10-4 in the decisive fifth set. Cypress ran off the last 11 points in a row to shock the host Vikings and advance with the 5-set victory. Brittany Zavala scored four kills during the final set rally as All-State outside hitter Kayla Owens served to hold sideout over the last 10 points. Cypress was four points away from being eliminated in a sweep, trailing 22-21 in the third set, but rallied as LBCC committed a pair of attack errors for the extra-points win. For Cypress (19-8), Owens powered 18 kills, Zavala 11 kills and 14 digs, Marina Pilkington 10 kills and five blocks, and Ashley Corona was a a defensive wizard on 39 digs. For LBCC, Tylie Johnson compiled 24 kills, Jessica Blakeman 17 kills and Sierra Davis 16 kills. Levila Iosua set 57 assists and Lizbeth Lopez made 25 digs. The co-SCC South champ Vikings season closed at 22-4. Cypress placed second to Irvine Valley in the OEC standings and now both are in the state tournament. FULL RELEASE
