No. 1 Lasers Move to 9-0 with Sweep of the Hawks

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball stayed at the top of the Orange Empire Conference standings with another sweep on Friday.

The Lasers defeated Santiago Canyon, 25-16, 25-13, 25-11, on the road.

Irvine Valley, which is ranked No. 1 in the state, has still not dropped a set this season.

The Lasers, who improved their record to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference, have now won 27 straight sets in 2018.

Irvine Valley also upped its win streak to 36 dating back to 2016.

The Lasers hit .419 as a team on the night Friday and are now hitting .376 as a team on the season, which ranks third in the state only behind Columbia (.469) and Imperial Valley (.414).

Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni had another big match for IVC. She ended with 19 kills, hit .739 and chipped in three blocks, three digs and two aces.

She has 49 kills in her last four matches.

Freshman middle blocker Kristin Austin added 10 kills and hit an impressive .692 on the night with her 10 kills coming in 13 attempts with only one error. She also had two blocks.

Freshman outside hitters Lea Kruse and Alaina Gendale each finished with five kills for IVC. Kruse also had nine digs and two aces and Gendale finished with  three digs and two aces.

Freshman setter Truth Hafey ran the offense with 37 assists and had four digs and three aces for the Lasers.

Hafey ranks third in the state in assists per set at 11.26.

Irvine Valley has a bye on Wednesday and plays again next Friday, traveling to Riverside for a 6 p.m. conference match. Riverside is third in the conference standings.

The Tigers are 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the OEC.
