Samantha Madrid of Cypress College Leads All-Conference Selections

The Cypress women's volleyball team won the Orange Empire Conference title and also took top honors when all-conference teams were announced earlier this week.

Cypress, which was ranked among the top teams in the state this season, captured the conference crown with a record of 15-1.

The Chargers finished three matches ahead of both Golden West and Saddleback.
Nancy Welliver, in her 17th year in charge of Cypress, was named the conference coach of the year. It is the third time that she has received the coach of the year honors in the conference. 
She guided the Chargers to their third ever conference title this season.

Cypress freshman middle blocker Samantha Madrid was selected as the conference's player of the year.

Madrid also earned AVCA All-American second team and all-state honors.
Madrid led her team in kills, kills per set, blocks, and hitting percentage. Her .450 hitting percentage ranked second in the state at the end of the regular season.

Madrid averaged 3.65 kills per set and was fourth in the conference in kills with 295 during the regular season.

Earning first team honors from Cypress were sophomore outside hitter Rockelle Gholson, sophomore setter Samantha Martinez and sophomore libero Emily Witz.

Saddleback had freshman outside hitter Mandy Sides and freshman libero Morgan Hocker earn first team honors, while Golden West's first team choices were sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Paperny and sophomore setter and outside hitter Kate Stanjevich.

Irvine Valley, which finished in fourth place in the conference, had freshman outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa and sophomore middle blocker Hailey Riden make the first team.

Riverside was represented by sophomore setter Sabrina Gonzalez and sophomore outside hitter Marissa Vialpando on the first team.

Sophomore outside hitter Viridiana Serrano from Santa Ana, freshman libero Sierra Lim from Orange Coast, freshman middle blocker Rebecca Hicks from Fullerton and freshman outside hitter Riley Hausner rounded out the first team selections.
